The ground breaking 1st Annual World Conference on Women’s Studies that took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka in March 2015 not only let to founding of the World Center for Women’s Studies (World-CWS), but also brought scholars from across the world to work together, network and to start collaborative research aimed at promoting global gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The invigorating presentations revealed existing gender disparity in many developed and developing countries across the world including Sri Lanka, but also called for a greater effort to a global recognition of enormous power and potential of women’s empowerment to countries’ development. The published special issue of a journal Research in Political Sociology in 2015 that contains selected presentations, is the first step in joint scholarly collaboration intending to shed some light on the existing global gender disparities.
